Chapter 24: A Visitor

Dan yawned as he stood on a small ladder in the classroom, painting a section of drywall he had recently replaced. The morning sun shined through the open windows and a slight breeze curled through the room, bringing with it the sound of sirens in the distance. He paused and shook his head, wondering why there were so many. It sounded as though every person equipped with a noisemaker was on their way to the same place in Anger.

He had a sudden fear that whatever was going on might concern his children, and Dan was halfway down the ladder, paintbrush in hand when he realized that they were probably fine. Had to be fine.

They’re not here, Dan thought, forcing himself to climb back up the ladder. Jessica said they were going down into Nashua today to do some shopping at the mall there. They are not in Anger.

That thought helped to slow his heart rate, and he dipped the brush into the paint. He focused on painting the patch, and nothing else. Within a few minutes, he felt better, slightly more relaxed.

Then the thrum of a car’s engine caught him off guard, as it always did. He waited for Eli to come to him and inform him as to who might be in the cemetery, and whom they were visiting.

The boy didn’t arrive, and after a few minutes, Dan heard the car start up again. Within a short time, it was gone, and Dan shrugged. He returned to painting.

When he finished, he climbed down the ladder and went into his room to clean off the brush. He did it with the same care and attention as he did everything else, making certain that no hint of paint remained in the bristles. When he was satisfied with it, he set it on the sill of the open window to dry.

Dan glanced around. Where is Eli?

A knot of worry formed in his stomach. While he didn’t know if anything could hurt the ghost child, Dan feared the worst. He exited the classroom and looked out over the cemetery. Nothing odd came to his attention.

“Mr. Tate?”

Dan turned and saw Colonel Cross striding across the grass toward him.

“Colonel,” Dan said politely. “What’s going on?”

“We have a small situation. Madame Haupt was wondering if you would be so good as to accompany me?”

“Of course,” Dan answered. “Um, do I need the shotgun?”

A smile crossed the colonel’s otherwise serious face. “Not at all, but I do appreciate you inquiring as to whether or not you should be armed. Excellent, Mr. Tate. Quite excellent.”

The dead man executed a sharp ‘about-face’ maneuver and walked with purpose back the way he had come. Dan hurried after him, stepping around headstones while the colonel passed through them.

In less than a minute, the two of them joined a large crowd of the dead in the far right corner. The ghosts parted so Dan could walk forward to where Eli crouched beside another child. Dan didn’t recognize the dead child with Eli, so he hesitated, stopping several feet back.
